If you and your partner need to make important decisions about family life and cannot agree what to do, then seeing a family mediator could help. Whether you are struggling with financial issues following the breakdown of your relationship or in agreeing arrangements for your children, mediation offers you and your partner the opportunity to discuss your concerns with an independent person who has been trained to help you reach an agreement.
Mediation can also be used to agree contact arrangements between your children and their grandparents or other family members where relations have become strained.
Using mediation to resolve family disputes is not compulsory but is something that must have been explored in most cases before you go to court. Other than in exceptional circumstances, everyone involved in a family dispute will be expected to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) to find out more about the mediation process and whether it could assist. Legal aid may be available to help cover the cost and you will still be free to seek legal advice later.
Mediation will not usually be appropriate in cases involving domestic violence or abuse.
